Better Solutions-Faster Response
Overview
When the Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART) began overhauling their current fleet of rail cars it was noted that the old dirty carpets were a must to replace. BART realized that some out-of-the-box thinking was required to come up with a flooring system that would meet the strict fire, smoke and toxicity requirements and still meet the aesthetics the customers demanded.
Description
When BART first reached out to The Flanagan Corporation, their current passenger rail transit car floor system was a glued down rubber system. The process required a multi step gluing process that took about 7-10 days to complete per car. Since BART’s fleet numbers more than 650 cars it would have taken more than 8 years to replace the fleet with this rubber system.
The Flanagan Corporation worked with the BART engineering staff to design and develop a spray applied fast set system that would lower the installation time from 7 – 10 days per car down to just 1 day per car. This fast set spray applied system would also meet the strict fire, smoke, and toxicity requirements and still achieve the aesthetics their customers demand.
Result
Using the Precidium™ co-developed with Quantum Chemical the installation time per car was brought down to 1 day. The Precidium™ also provide a 3 times more durable floor covering system and brought their total installed cost per car down 3 times what the rubber floor cost. |
