Better Solutions-Faster Response
Overview
With the recent expansion and purchase of an $88 million facility MAG Industries faced some engineering problems that proved difficult to overcome. One particular area that was most challenging was the air ventilation system installed that was designed to evacuate and clear the air for more than 700,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space.
Description
When The Flanagan Corporation was contacted the 10 large ventilation flumes that were leaking from the welds and from seams in the metal. The oil that was being ventilated into the flumes coming from the air being pulled from the manufacturing floor was leaking from the flumes and onto the concrete floor below which was a walk way. This was making for a slip hazard and potential degradation of the concrete floor and walls.
The Flanagan Corporation work with the contractor who supplied the system, Key Air to support them to seal the leaks in the flumes. Hot welding was not an option due to the fact oil was present and the ventilation units were running. It was also imperative that no off gassing came from the application as it would have been ventilated and possibly sent back into the building.
Results
The Flanagan Corporation selected a state-of-the-art epoxy adhesive which is typically used in aerospace applications only we were able to supply them with a “cold weld” that sealed the leaks. This was a long term solution to their problems and saved the contractor significant cost of pulling out the flumes to hot weld off site. This would have meant down time for Mag Industries which at this point was in full production. |
